Hawaii - Day 6

We headed back to Pearl City this morning. We arrived just in time to board the boat to the U.S.S. Arizona memorial in Pearl Harbour. When the Japanese came around the tip of the Island in 1941 they headed straight for the U.S. fleets. They wanted to dis-arm the U.S. by taking out their battleships. All the U.S. ships were lined up along what is called Battleship Row, and they hit every one of their ships. Most went down. Most ships flipped, but two ships sunk upright. The U.S.S. Arizona was one of those two. The ships sank so quickly that although the rescuers worked tirelessly to free the sailors, many died within and their bodies have never been recovered from the ship. In time they built a memorial above the sunken ship Arizona.

Pear Harbour offers a short boat trip out to the memorial  - you can see bits of the ship below. But what's more interesting is that from the gallons upon gallons of fuel oil which was on board the ship continues to leak into the harbour and is expected to continue for many more years to come.

In the afternoon we headed back to our local beach... we call it our beach now as it is so close to the condo, not at all touristy and aside from the surfers, not too many swimmers.

The waves were just so high - I think there was a weather front coming through making them extra high.

In the evening we headed out to watch the sun set and ended up watching the waves crash in for a while. Such extreme power in water.
